Belleville East HS Wins the Gateway Class Tournament

Yesterday, Gateway Chess organized the 2025/2026 Gateway Class Tournament, hosted by Parkway Southwest Middle School.


Belleville East HS posted their third straight victory with 14.5 points out of a possible 16. Bellevillle West HS finished second with 13 points, and De Smet HS and Jackson HS tied for third with 12 points each with De Smet taking the third place award on tiebreaks.


In the younger divisions, Herrin HS won the 9th and Under, Parkway Central MS won the 8th and Under Division division, Community ES, Forsyth ES, and MICDS all tied for first in the 6th and Under, Glenridge ES won the 5th and Under, and New City School won the 3rd and Under..


In the Premier section, #5 seed David Zhang, an 8th grader from Parkway Central MS, faced down the toughest competition and won the Premier section with 3.5 points out of 4,


Six perfect 4-0 results were achieved, across all sections but the Premier.


169 players participated. The tournament ran smoothly, and we were able to finish an hour sooner than the published schedule.
