Belleville East HS Wins the Ed Baur Open

The first Gateway Chess tournament of the 2025-26 season, the Ed Baur Open was held yesterday at Maplewood/Richmond Heights HS.


In the High School Division, Belleville East HS scored an impressive, with 12.5 out of a possible 15 points, 2.5 points better than 2nd place Jackson HS.


Wydown MS won the Middle School division, and Meramec ES won the Elementary division.


Three players recorded 10,000+ Gateway Grand Prix point totals for the tournament, giving them a nice start to the season. The top players from each grade in the Grand Prix standings will be honored at the end-of-the-season Gateway Chess Banquet.


158 players in all participated. There were some unfortunate technical glitches at the start of the tournament that caused a delay, but overall the tournament proceeded well.
